Choosing a unique Mother of the Bride dress (or Mother of the Groom dress) can be a daunting task, especially when it’s such an important occasion in your son’s or daughter’s life. In my opinion, most “typical” Mother of the Bride dresses are frumpy, matronly, and not usually fashionable. So in today’s post I’m highlighting 50 classy and unusual Mother of the Bride dresses, so you can feel beautiful and look amazing on your child’s big day.
Of course, I must preface this by saying: if you plan on wearing a bright color, florals, or anything out of the norm of “typical” Mother of the Bride (or Groom) fashion, please double check with the bride to make sure she is okay with your choice.
In my family we embrace bold fashion statements, but some brides will surely feel differently. And try to get clearance on this several months in advance, NOT the week before the wedding. She will be stressed enough on her own and does not need the added stress of your outfit.
The prices on these dresses range quite a bit, but if you’re strictly looking for Mother of the Bride dresses under $200, there’s an entire section at the end of affordable options.
Where to Buy a Mother of the Bride Dress
These are my favorite retailers for buying unique Mother of the Bride dresses:
Can the Mother of the Bride Wear a Patterned Dress?
I don’t see why not! Mother of the Bride dresses are definitely not limited to solid colors. A tasteful floral or a delicate beaded pattern are certainly appropriate options for the wedding day.
Should the Mother of the Bride Match the Bridal Party?
I think this question should be answered on a case-by-case basis. While it’s certainly not the norm in modern weddings to match the bridal party, if the bride would like her mom to wear a coordinating color, I think that could be a nice touch to incorporate her into your special day.
Should the Mother of the Bride Wear a Long Dress?
Thankfully, wedding rules have become more lax these days, and while it was traditionally proper for the Mother of the Bride or Groom to only wear a long dress for evening weddings, I think long maxi dresses can certainly have a place in an early afternoon garden wedding as well.
But Can the Mother of the Bride Wear a Short Dress?
Again, yes, this is totally acceptable! The Mother of the Bride or Groom does not have to wear a floor length dress. During the Spring and Summer months shorter dresses are more popular due to the weather, but can be worn any time of year.Of course, I would steer away from anything too short, but just above the knee or below is perfectly acceptable for a co*cktail attire or a garden wedding. (For black tie or more formal weddings I would opt for a longer length).
